The “dues paid” button worn by newly organized steelworkers represented the promise of regular work, steady wages, and a part of the American dream. Reflecting the cultural patchwork of our country at the time, they came from varied backgrounds, ethnic groups, races, and levels of education. Based on 1930’s images (courtesy of the Library of Congress), this piece is a tribute to those steelworkers who worked hard, long hours in dangerous conditions to provide for their families and ensure a better future for their children.
