I make contemporary stitched art for display. The processes I use are technical and labour intensive but the resulting visual impact is paramount for me. I see cloth less as fabric and more as an un-primed, un-stretched ground. The nature of fabric is that it bonds with dye and so responds to my creative needs. I build up this work using my own fabrics which have been dyed or patterned with a variety of surface design processes. The fabric is then heavily quilted with machine stitching or hand embroidery. I hope to express new ideas with this practice that are linked to the past. I want every process and technique that I use to contribute to the content of my work. 48 x 40 hand-dyed cottons and silks, machine pieced and machine quilted cottons and silks, two layers of wool batting, cotton backing. |
