St. Vinnie’s (St. Vincent de Paul) shelter for the homeless, available from November to April, houses 80 people; nowhere near enough shelter during our wet winters. The homeless stand in lines for handouts of food, clothing, and the name tags that ensure them a warm, dry bed—as long as they appear daily at dusk and leave at dawn. I stretched beyond my comfort zone, using materials used by homeless people for beds: cardboard, tarps, and blankets. Permission to use the newspaper, photos, and text provided by the Register Guard of Eugene. |
