The image of sinking into deep, still, black water conjures one of our most primal fears of drowning. Drowning in water is a metaphor for experiencing life's darkest emotional moments: overwhelming loss, pain and despair.

David's Whyte's poem, The Well of Grief, speaks to me of transformative surrender to the darkness and the wisdom that moment can bring. Vivid images of the woman in the poem came into my mind. She is rising from the deep—strong and peaceful, into the sunlight.
