Concrete & Grassland
◄ ► No Tall Trees • Mary Williams |
I live in a rural environment in South Australia, which is often described as the “driest state in the driest continent.” As a consequence, there were no tall trees available for use in carrying electricity cables. Stobie poles (named for their inventor J. C. Stobie) were constructed from concrete and steel for this purpose. They are now as familiar throughout rural areas as the clumps of Xanthorrheoa that also dot the landscape. |
