I then used a variety of threads to free-motion quilt the piece to enhance the butterfly and the lilacs. All the work was done on a domestic sewing machine. It is thread painted, and surrounded by embroidered flowers, gauze and commercial cotton shores, with iron dyed silk on the opposite shore. The lake itself is batik, fused in place without quilting stitches. In real life, the Rainbow Heron is normally shades of grey and blue and are frequently seen in this area. |

I free-motion quilted with a tight stitch for emphasis to outline the cranes and feathers, and a looser stitch for the background to give a sense of light air currents in the sunset. The background and darker trees are all made from silk ties, including the lining of a tie. The lighter aspens are batik with ink and thread painting. The aspens and landforms are free cut and fused.
